About the project:
The project took place in an old warehouse, inside a block in the historic center of Olhão. A fishing town, with a strong Islamic influence, it presents an irregular and organic mesh of narrow streets and overlapping constructions, of recognized (cubist) volumetry.
The existing 2-storey building, high ceilings, vaulted ceilings and roof terrace, fits into the typology of popular architecture, which is intended to preserve, enhance and adapt.
On the ground floor, with a total area of 90m2, there are the social areas of the house - kitchen and living room in open space, served by a new patio that emerges with the demolition of a vaulted ceiling. The interior-exterior connection is made through the two pre-existing arches, whose dimension gives the spaces a sense of continuity between them.
The patio is part of a set of outdoor spaces, one per floor, where it is intended to recreate the memory of the social and leisure experience of the traditional Algarve house. On the 0th floor, the patio with an excavated tank, on the 1st floor, the base of the original exterior stairs that connect to the roof terrace, overlooking the Ria Formosa.
On the upper floor are the two en-suite bedrooms, where the original high ceilings are lowered to improve the comfort level of the compartments. The remaining space of these roofs is used for the incorporation of infrastructural equipment.
The coverings characteristic of this type of construction are maintained or reconstituted, such as the tile, present on all floors (interior and exterior) but there is still an alternative addition, the white metallic element in the exterior spaces, present in the spiral stairs, in the guardrails and in the shading structure that punctuates the roof.
